Bo Bichette Resigns With The Blue Jays
On January 14th, 2023, phones were buzzing with news from the Blue Jays. The Jays had re-signed 11 of their players, including first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr which eased a lot of fans' minds; however, Bo Bichettes’ name didn't make that list. It was confirmed that Bichette had asked for $7.5 Million on a one-year deal, but the Blue Jays only offered $5 Million, causing the case to head to arbitration. Throughout each arbitration case in the MLB, Bichette and the Jays had the biggest separation.
Although this case was headed to arbitration (which started on January 30th), The Jays avoided the hearing, inking their star shortstop to a three-year deal announced on February 7th. Terms were released on February 9th and state the following. Bichette is guaranteed to make $33.6 Million through the three years, but with bonuses, he could make up to $40.65 Million. This deal makes Bo Bichette not available for option for the duration of this contract.
Last season Bo Bichette played 159 games, going up to the plate 652 times. He batted in 93 runs through 189 hits and 24 home runs.
There is no doubt that Bichette is a star shortstop in the MLB, and he has contributed to his team in many ways. After the 2022 postseason and his collision with outfielder George Springer, fans doubted if he should stay in Toronto. Many fans thought that Bo was the cause of the loss of that game which resulted in the Jays being swept in the wildcard round.
Now that Bichette is staying in Toronto for the next couple of years, the looming question is clear. Will Bo Bichette continue producing and be offered another contract after his current one is up? Or will he find a new team? We will have to wait and see.
