Francisco Alvarez and the “Baby Mets”
It’s no secret that the New York Mets season hasn’t exactly gone to plan. With the largest payroll in all of baseball, the Mets had high expectations to have a huge and exciting season in 2023.
However, things did not go to plan for the Mets. With a World Baseball Classic injury taking their star closer Edwin Diaz out for the season, the bad luck for this team started before the season even began.
Starting pitching and injuries in the rotation made it difficult for the team to ever get on a roll. Not to mention the seemingly simultaneous slumps of each star player that the Mets have.
Despite this slow start and frustrating season for the team and fans alike, there have been some bright spots that spread hope for the season and the future ahead.
The “Baby Mets” have been fan favorites this season, the rookie Mets that have spent this year learning the ropes and fulfilling their dreams in the big leagues.
Francisco Alvarez has led this group of youngsters, becoming a lovable part of the Mets organization. The 21-year-old has quickly become the everyday catcher and has become a force to be reckoned with around the league.
Alvarez leads the rest of the catchers in the league with his 17 home runs and is amongst the top in several other stats. The impact that this young catcher is having is evident, having several home runs in big spots that have led the Mets to victory time and time again.
The passion, fire, and power from Alvarez have absolutely lit up this Mets team and fanbase.
The Baby Mets have had a wonderful positive impact on this team, showing promise for the future and want and dedication to this team right now.
Alongside Alvarez has been Brett Baty, who has become the Mets’ everyday third basemen, and Mark Vientos, who has just rejoined the Mets after spending some time in triple-A Syracuse. Ronny Mauricio, an infielder and switch hitter, has not yet made his Major League debut and is already exciting Mets fans. He has been tearing his way through the minors, showing off his power and versatility that will one day soon fit perfectly with this Mets squad.
There have been mishaps and missteps, of course, as happens in any rookie season, but these Baby Mets have shown New York that there is something within this organization to root for, even with all the disappointment that this season has brought.
They brought immediate impact by lengthening an already dangerous lineup by adding their power. They have reenergized a team and a fanbase that has been desperately needing something to look forward to.
Francisco Alvarez and the Baby Mets are here to stay. These young athletes are showing off exactly why they deserve to be in the big leagues and just how important a rookie can be to re-energize a team with several veterans and established names.
