Unrivaled

As most basketball fans know by now, WNBA players do not make enough money. The numbers are staggering when looking at the WNBA compared to the NBA. This often leads to players going overseas during the off-season to have somewhere to continue playing and earn more money. Many WNBA players have spoken up about this and how it leads to players searching for other options during the offseason to continue to make money. Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier have started a league that may change that.

The league will be called “Unvrivaled” and includes six franchises with 30 players from the WNBA. It won’t follow the traditional basketball league but will instead consist of one–on–one and three-on-three games. The “season” will be from January to March, and the goal is for all players to earn competitive salaries, which will hopefully be similar to what they get from their WNBA contracts.

Unrivaled will give players the chance to stay at home instead of leaving to go overseas. We’ve seen some strides toward doing this in the past with Athletes Unlimited, which sees the season take place in the spring right before the WNBA season begins, but the season is very short. Time will tell when it comes to how many players chose to stay in the U.S. and how many have already signed their contracts and have to play overseas again.
