Bill Belichick bets on Mac Jones; Clarifies the QB plans for upcoming season.
The New England Patriots made a shocking move last week, deciding to waive Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham, who were both potential options for quarterbacks and most likely backups, as Mac Jones will likely be the starter for the team this year. Still, some fans believed that Zappe could potentially challenge Mac Jones’s starting spot. The decision to cut Zappe was controversial, as Zappe took over Jones’s spot when he was injured last season. Zappe completed 65 out of 92 passes last season with 781 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Cutting Zappe and Cunningham left the Patriots with Jones as the only QB on the roster.
Rest assured, head coach Bill Belichick had a plan. He claimed former Carolina Panthers third-round pick Matt Corral (QB) off of waivers. Corral missed the entire last season with a ligament tear that occurred in a pre-season game. He spoke about Corral via press conference, saying, “Based on what we saw with Carolina [Panthers] and the college film at Mississippi, he’s a player we wanted to work with.”
Bill Belichick still has faith in Bailey Zappe, who will be on their practice squad until further notice. The longtime Patriots coach called him “a good, young, developing player.” In the same interview, Belichick made it known that he has full faith that Mac Jones will have an amazing season and that he is looking forward to the upcoming season with Mac.
