The top two NWSL teams go head-to-head just before playoffs

On Saturday, September 30, the Portland Thorns took on the San Diego Wave. The starting formation for Portland was 4-2-3-1, while San Diego’s was 4-3-3. These are the top two teams in the Nation Women’s Soccer League.  Both teams have qualified for the semi-finals.

The Thorns looked strong in the first half. San Diego stole the lead in minute 20, thanks to forward player Kyra Carusa. At long last, rain came to break San Diego player Alex Morgan’s 8-game scoreless drought with a header goal in the 38th minute. Surprisingly, there was no stoppage time at halftime. That’s something that very rarely happens with any game, men’s or women’s.

The rest of the game remained scoreless and uneventful, leaving San Diego with a 2-0 win.

Here are the stats for this game:

Possession: 52% in favor of Portland; 48% for San Diego

Shots on Goal: 5 for each team

Total Shots: 15 in favor of Portland; 12 for San Diego

Total saves: 3 for Portland, 5 for San Diego

This win puts San Diego in first place, moving the defending champs down to second place in the league.

There are only two games left in the regular season. Will the Portland Thorns be de-throned, or will they renew their subscription to the title?
